Common Questions

Who should use this tool and why?

Energy ED should be used by utilities or independent power producers contemplating actions of public interest. It is also designed for business, environmental and civic leaders seeking understandable answers to complex energy questions and by teachers hoping to educate students about energy choices.

Is it overly complex? Are the results believable?

Energy ED is sophisticated enough to produce highly credible results, yet simple enough to be used by citizens with little or no working knowledge about energy production or transmission. The program uses a power plant database with current fuel prices, emission rates and operating efficiency, as well as state-specific information on renewable resources, historic growth, efficiency and load management programs. The models are technically defensible and backed by the latest publicly available data.

Can you customize this for my service area? What other services are available?

Energy ED's data can be modified to reflect a service territory or other region. The Energy ED team of consultants can also help create a set of scenarios to simulate special concerns, or to reflect ranges of known public opinion. We are committed to integrating Energy ED’s capabilities with your specific needs. We can also help you build the right audience for public forums and attract news media coverage.

Are estimates of renewable resources included? Do they constrain users?

Energy ED incorporates the state-specific availability of hydro power, wind power and biomass resources based on estimates made by national laboratories. Technologies may be investigated beyond their real world availability. "Red Flags" indicate when resource constraints are surpassed and highlight other reality-based considerations.

What about upgrades, updates and service?

Subscription holders will receive an annual update including the latest available data and program upgrades. The software is robust, but should you encounter a bug, one call or e-mail is all that is necessary for prompt service.
